Assembled here for the first time are all the known original historical sources for the famed Taj Mahal, which was built by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan as a tomb for his wife Mumtaz Mahal, following her death in 1631. Until now the great majority of the 17th-century Persian sources--consisting of references in Mughal court histories, official documents, and inscriptions on the Taj Mahal itself--had never been translated. The authors, W.E. Begley and Z.A. Desai, are internationally recognized specialists in Mughal architecture and Persian historical sources during the reign of Shah Jahan, and their findings shed important new light on the history of the tomb that many regard as the world's most beautiful building.
The anthology is divided into six parts. Part I contains new translations of relevant excerpts from the contemporary Persian histories by Tabataba'i, Qazwini, 'Abd al-Hamid Lahori Muhammad Waris, and Muhammad Salih. Part II assembles the few surviving documents relating to the Taj--and translates for the first time the text of the royal farman issued to Raja Jai Singh awarding him property in exchange for the land he had donated for construction of the tomb. Part III gives both texts and translations of the historical and Qur'anic inscriptions on the Taj--including a newly discovered second signature of the calligrapher Amanat Khan. Parts IV and V assemble allthe known data on the calligrapher, and the architect and supervisors of construction. The evidence of the Diwan-i-Muhandis points to Ustad Ahmad Lahori as the architect, but the court histories make it clear that Shah Jahan himself slso had a hand in the designing of his great architectural monuments. Part VI assembles selected references to the Taj and Shah Jahan made by various European travelers like Mundy, Manrique, Bernier, Tavernier and Manucci.
The book is richly illustrated with more than 150 color and black-and-white photographs of the entire Taj complex, the most complete selection ever published in one book. Also published here are detailed new plans and elevation drawings drawn by W.E. Begley from measurements given in the Persian histories the first attempt to reconstruct the grid system devised for the tomb by the original Mughal architects.
