Mamallapuram, or Mahabalipuram, some thirty miles south of Madras on the Coromandal coast, is a picturesque site of about thirty Pallava momouments, rock cut and structural, most of which were made in the seventh and eighth centuries. The site is much older and one of its temples has been a centre of pilgrimage for some two thousand years.
The book principally comprises three parts introduction, extracts from the works of various scholars and lay visitors, and notes on maps and drawings. In the introduction, the author attempts to trace the history of Mamallapuram scholarship, He also discusses starting with 1500 and till the beginning of modern, the developemnts in the history of the site and the inscriptions. Thereafter the book consists of extracts. The extracts are mainly of two kinds: discussions by scholars on questions arising from the early history of the site and the style, date and aesthetic impressions of the monuments, and comments by visitors who were not scholars, but having travelled, were impelled to deliver themselves of their views. The author has even included a few extracts from old guide-book. The author has on a few occasions added brief remarks or clarifications.
