Of all the great rivers in the world, it is probable that there is none so holy as the Ganges. For hundreds of years she has been revered as the very spiritual life flowing through India, and although varying religious sects hold different accounts of the Ganges legend, there are now at least 350 million Hindus who regard her as sacred.
Many believe that Goddess Ganga - the Ganges - came down to earth to redeem the souls of Bhagirath's prodigal sons, and that she continues to purify the souls of the dead and absolve the sins of the living. On her sacred banks festivals are held in honour of 'Mother Ganga' a temple has been built at the legendery spot where she descended to earth and, each day, many pilgrims come to pray at the river, sometimes immersing them selves in the spiritually cleansing waters.
Even the non-religious find it hard to regard the Ganges as a mere reiver, for the intensity opf the devotion she inspires, together with the majesty on the land she irrigates, does indeed lend to her waters a sense of greatness and mystery.
