Ecology has been defined by Haeckel as, “The body of knowledge concerning the economy of nature- the investigations of the total relations of the animal, both to its inorganic and organic environment, including above all its friendly and inimical relation with those animals and plants with which it comes directly or indirectly into contact.”
Himalayan ecology has a bearing on the lives of millions of people living in the Indian sub- continent. From the plains of Pakistan in the west to India and further east to Bangladesh, there exists a delicate ecological balance, which is dependant on the Himalayan ecosystem – for its stability and continuity. Countless number of rivers and streams originating from the Himalayan chain flow through a major part of the Indian sub- continent; on their way to the ocean. The mighty Himalaya serve as a barrier for the moisture laden monsoon clouds; thereby causing about 85% of the total precipitation received in India and its surrounding countries.
Of late, the subject matter of Himalayan ecology has aroused great interest not only for the scientist, but also for the environmentalist, poet, author, political worker and even the common man, seminars and symposia are held from time to time, both at the national and international levels; to discuss Himalayan ecology as a whole and its problems in particular.
This book encompases all aspects of Himalayan ecology, viz. Himalayan climate, soils, flora, fauna, aquatic and rural ecosystems and ecological problems. During the writing of this book, a vast collection of published and unpublished literature was freely consulted and hence no originality is claimed. It is aimed to provide a concise handy reference book on the various aspects of Himalayan ecology. It will be appreciated that it has not been possible to go into the finer details of the subject, primarily due to limited space available.
