Studies in Skanda Purana - present the data derived from the exploration of the oceanic text of the Skanda Mahapurana relating to Geography, History, Polity, Society, Economic life Religion and Philosophy, Tirthas, lconography and Fine Arts. Skanda Purana in its present form, represents the Age of lmperial Kanauj and Struggle for the Empire, roughly from 9th century A.D. to the 12th century A.D.
The material life in the age of Skanda Purana was happy and prosperous. India comprised crores of villages, cities and ports. Villages were rich and prosperous. Villages played a significant part in the economic and administrative life of the country. The economic prosperity of Karmabhumi-Bharata was based on the geographical factors and natural resources of the country viz, the fertile land with mountains, forests and rivers, full of different types of trees and animals, as wellas metals.
The material prosperity led to the enrichment of our culture reflected in te grand temples. Temples were set up for the deity of one's own devotion. Different ascetic orders theistic and athiestic, too marked their stamps on the socio-religious life of the country. We find references to Matsyendra Natha and Mahamuni Rmanuja of Dravida. The Prama Bhakti was expounded by Narada and Sandilya. Buddhism survived Buddha, a jatila was worshipped in the form of Visnu. Skanda refers to famous six philosophical schools of Sankya-yoga, Purava-mimasmsa and Uttaramimasmsa (Vedanta) as well as Nyaya and Vaisesika.
Pilgrimage played very important role in the making of Ancient Indian heritage. The entire country from Setu in the South to Kedara in the north was studded with tirthas. The Skanda Purana describes the sacred places from the Himalaya (Kedara Khanda) to Setupranta.
The references to the sanctity of Kalapagrama and the river Sita (Tarim-Yarkando) throws light on the influenceof Brahmanism in Central Asia. Similarly references to the sacred sport in Dvipantara like Kataha (Keda in Malaya) is an important allusion to the expansion of Indian cuulture in South East Asia.)
