The Tattvacinatamani of Gangesopadhyaya (13th cent.) is the basic work of Navya- Nyaya, which can unreservedly called a great work, having few parallels. It is a systematic account of epistemology, logic and philosophy of grammar. The originality of the work lies not only in the treatment of the above subjects, but on the method of treatment. Gangesa has used a new diction and idiom to expound his philosophy and to put forward his dialectics. He is the father of a new style and almost a new set of perfectly accurate terminology. The terminology and language developed by Gangesa and other subsequent Naiyayikas have been used by writers not only of their philosophical schools but slso of other disciplines, such as grammar, poetics, dharmasastra, etc.
Till very recently, Western scholars of Indian philosophy and some of the Indians who have orientation in Western methodology ignored Gangesa's work and the Navya-Nyaya literature based on the former. It is very recently that a few scholars both in the East and in the West have realized the importance of Gangesa's tradition and accepted that the metaphysical basis of Navya-Nyaya is thorougly realistic and its logic is a formal logic showing an unusual power of abstraction. The Tattvacintamani of Gangesa is divided in four parts, viz.
i. Pratryaksa (Perception), ii. Anumana (Inference), iii. Upamana (Analogy), and iv. Sabda (Verbal testimony).
Many commentaries have been written on the Tattvacintamani most comprehensive and complete one is the Tattvacintamani- rahasya of Mathuranatha Tarkavagisa (1600-1675). The complete text of the Tattvacinatamani along with Mathuranatha's commentary, was edited by the illustrious Naiyayika MM. Kamakhyannatha Tarkavagisa and published by the Asiatic Society in the Biblitheca Indica (1888-1901). Since the second part containing the Anumanakhanda (on Inference) is the most important and widely studied, it is being brought out in the first instance with an exhaustive introduction and several valuable indexes by a renowned Nyaya scholar of the Bengal tradition.
