The present English translation of the Tarikh-i-Mahabatajngi of Yusuf ‘Ali Khan is an attempt to remove a long-standing desideratum in our knowledge of the history of the Bengal Subah in the 18th century. The Persian text of the work, edited by Dr. Abdus Subhand and published in the B. I. Series of the Asiatic Society earlier, has already received the acclaim which it richly deserves, judged by the reviewsw published in Indian and foreign periodicals. Yusuf ‘Ali Khan’s observations on the celebrated Black Hole episode, as highlighted by the translator, provide a new direction for the followers of the age-old controversy, which is so indissolubly connected with the name of Calcutta. The footnotes are both informative and scholarly. This English version of Yusuf ‘Ali’s mementous memoir is intended for a much wider readership and constitutes a positive contribution to a better understanding of the events of the most revolutionary period of Bengal’s history.
