The classical Indonesian Adiparva is a tenth century work composed in the classical Indonesian language, known as the Kawi language. At present, this language is no more understood by the common Indonesian people. This prompted me to undertake the present English translation of the Adiparava.
Impact of the Mahabharata on Indonesian society. The legend of Krsna and Arjuna has enjoyed an unenviable status in Indonesian history stretching over a period of centuries. During the last one thousand years Indonesian society has been deeply influenced by the epics and puranic stories, particularly by the story of Krsna and Arjuna. The universal presence of these mythological heroes seems to have pervaded almost every sphere of Indonesian life during this period, as is amply demonstrated by the literature, sculpture and other archaeological discoveries of the intervening period. The story of the Mahabharata seems to have been told and retold through generations of people for umpteen number of times and consequently it has become an inalienable part of the lives and psyche of the Indonesian people. They feel a close affinity with the Mahabharata, and this goes to the extent of making them believe that incidents described in the Mahabharata took place in Indonesia itself. This belief is strengthened by the fact that a number of native cities, mountains, islands, rivers and shrines mentioned in the great epie are found and named also in Indonesia. For example, mount Sumeru (Himalaya), the highest mountain in the world bears slo similarity with the name of the highest mountain in Java, Sumeru. The country and the city of Rama or king Pausya, Ayodhya, was also the name of the former sultanate of central Java with its capital. Even the river flowing in this region is known as Sarayu, like the one in India. Many temple bear the names of Draupadi, Arjuna, Bhima, Nakula and Shadeva. Even the names mentioned in the epic have been used to name the mountains such as the Brahma ( East Java), the Arjuna (Java), the Indragiri (Indra’s hills of East Sumatra), the Jaya-Vijaya (New Guinea), Karinchi (South Sumatra), and the islands as Madhura, Sumba, bhima, Bali and places such as the Sunda and Sindu (South Bali).
It is believed that Krsna was born to rid the society of evil and evil-doers. Krsna was not only an astute diplomat, a yogi, but also an accomplished warrior. He fought many wars. Although he did not take part in the great Bharata war, yet it was he, who through the Mahabharata war, established the supremacy of virtue and justice. Similarly, Arjuna is regarded by the Indeonesians as the most handsome person on earth, and has a special place in the hearts of Indonesian people, being the most courageous of the five Pandava brothers in the Mahabharata. The legendary figures of Arjuna and Krsna continue to be the heart throbs of the Indonesian people, particularly of the Balinese, who, even today, read, sing, paraphrase and rewrite it in the classical form
