A substantial selection of content for this book has been made based on the series of lectures given by Tolkien at Oxford. From the author’s creative attention to detail in the lectures, there arises a sense of absolute clarity of his vision. It is as though Tolkien himself had entered into the imagined past - standing alongside Beowulf and his men shaking out their mail-shirts, as they stranded their ship on the coast of Denmark, listening to the growing fury of Beowulf at the mocking of Unferth, or looking up in astonishment at Grendel’s dreadful hand set under the roof of Heorot. On the other hand, the commentary in this book also includes much from the lectures in which, while always moored in the text, Tolkien manages to communicate his deeper insights. He carefully denies the idea that this is a sheer treasure story or just another dragon tale. He discusses the lines that tell of the burying of the golden things and discerns that it is rather the feeling for the treasure itself, the sad history that elevates to a whole new level. The whole thing is grave, tragic, ominous, and oddly real. The 'treasure' is not just some mere fortune that will allow the finder a good time, or espouse the princess. It is complete with history, leading back to the dark heathen eons beyond the memory of song, but certainly not beyond the touch of imagination.
