In the history of India, the sixth century B.C. was a watershed. Northern India then was politically fragmented with a number of kingdoms and perhaps a few republics. These were brought for the first time under the imperial rule of a single central authority by Bimbisara, the Emperor of Magadha, and this was further consolidated by his son and successor, Ajatashatru. Our account of their life and times has been reconstructed from references, sometimes divergent, in Buddhist and Jaina literature. Both claim the two kings as adherents of their respective faiths.
