Suppandi made his debut in Tinkle No.27 in January 1983. He was born out of a story sent by P.Varadarajan from Chennai. Varadarajan sent 3 stories in all in narrative form, and they were rendered into comics in the Tinkle studio, the illustrations being done by the inimitable Ram Waeerkar.
Stories of fools have a universal appeal but not many Suppandi fans would describe him as a fool. Suppandi gets into trouble not because he cannot follow orders but because he insists on thinking for himself. In the very first story, for example, his mistress wants him to call a doctor as she has a fever, but instead of following orders as any other domestic help would, he gets a brainwave and decides to treat her himself. The consequences of course are disastrous.
Suppandi was an instant success with Tinkle readers. They started sending Suppandi stories of their own, and the editors realised that the simpleton with the funny, rectangular head, had come to stay. Suppandi continues to be the most popular of the Tinkle cartoons, loved not only by children but also adults. Ram Waeerkar's talented daughter, Archana Amberkar, now illustrates the comic.
