M.H.F. Jayasuriya, Docteur de I ‘Universite (Sorbonne, Paris) is an Emeritus Professor of Sanskrit of the University of Kelaniya. He had many publications to his credit, the most recent of which are the edition and translation of the Jetavanarama Gold Plates (1987), seven of which were discovered during archaeological excavations carried out by the Cultural Triangle Project at the Jetavanarama Monastery in Anuradhapura, and Manjusrivastuvidyasastra, a unique silpassastra work dealing with Buddhist monastic architecture and iconography.
This present work is a mine of information on diverse aspects of arts and crafts of the medieval period of Sri Lankan history, the traditions, rites and customs and at times the superstitions associated with the manufacture and use of a staggering variety of artifacts, ranging from the lowly spittoon and betel boxes to magnificent crowns and thrones. The quantities of gold and other precious metals which are required for the production of these, the intricate designs and engravings which should embellish particular items of jewellery and ornaments, - all these and much more are described with a wealth of detail which is unmatched elsewhere. Incidentally. It throws a flood of light on the social and cultural conditions of a period when objects of art and aesthetic values greatly enriched the life of the people.
