Eric Hill was born in London and was known for the children's books that he wrote and illustrated. He is popularly - known for the character, Spot the Dog. He started writing books on Spot in 1976 for his son and the first book was published in 1980, which became very popular. Eric got the lift - the - flap idea from an advertising flyer and used it in his first book, which was a big hit and took up the top position in the UK's bestseller lists in just a matter of weeks.

This motivated him to make a series of books on Spot and also introduce more characters that included his mother, Sally, father, Sam, his siblings, Susie and Smith and grandparents. Spot's friends include Tom the crocodile, Helen the hippopotamus, Steve the monkey and several others.
