It is the first effort by an author to handle the history of military affairs in Ceylon covering the entire sweep of its recorded history which goes back over 2000 years
The book starts with a setting of peaceful relations which ceylon had with India for about for hundred any fifty years in the ancient days. Then the tum history took, regrettably, in the form of repeated incursions into Ceylon undertaken by the inhabitants of southem India.
Alongwith the military history the author also discusses the necessity for making palaces and fortresses for security during those days as well as the skill of the workman who constructed and thus architectural marvels appeared in Ceylon for the ske of defence.
The book also reveals the techniques adopted by the Portuguese and the Dutch to enter Ceylon without going through the processes of invasion. Further it discusses the engagements on sea between Dutch and the British and the naval battles for the control of forts of Ceylon for permanent military establishments by the British.
It is an absorbing study and makes an interesting reading of the military history of the Island.
