This Gazetteer is the first of its kind which deals with a provincial division of the Island – the District of Puttalam. This Gazetteer is based upon the system followed by Casie Chetty in his Ceylon Gazetteer and Lawrie’s.
This is the first time that statistical record of this kind has been prepared. The censuses for 1881, 1891 and 1901 have provided the ground work of this Gazetteer. Materials for the superstructure have been derived from various sources, among others the Ceylon Itinerary of 1881. The author has also made use of the Alphabetical list of the villages of the North Western Province 1907.
The entries of villages have been arranged in alphabetical order. In each of the entry, the number assigned to the village in Gan- Arachchi’s division is denoted, followed by the wasama of palata, then the Korale and lastly the Mudaliyar’s or Ratemaha tmaya’s division in which th village lies. Thereafter depending upon the information available, the Gazetteer provides distance & location of the village, name of the tank, products population, race, religion, literacy, division of population according to age group, occupation, & lastly the Police Court & Village Tribunal, under which the village falls. It adds other important information as and when available.
