This book is about the history of a small educated and cultured community of about 150.000 who have lived in Sri Lanka for several conturies from the time of the Sinhalese Kings.
The derivation of the name "Chetty" is from the word "Setthi", "Situ" or "Etti" meaning wealthy merchant, trader or banker.
The earliest ancestors of this community moved from North Western parts of India to Malabar and the Coramandal Coast due to political unrest. They got engaged in trade with Ceylon from Southern India.
Again due to political turmoil and famine they migrated from South india and settled in this country permanently. Many of them over the years intermarried with the major communities in Ceylon and lost their identity by the merger.
This book traces briefly the history of this community and features the lives and individual achievements of some contemporary Colombo Chetties as portrayed in a recent exhibition.
