An author of two books now, Gamini G. Punchihewa (as he it better known among the readers of the English Newspapers), rose to authorship from his early but humble beginnings in 1961, as a free-lance journalist to the local English newspapers and other wild flife and tourist magazines on varied subjects ranging from Veddas, will life archaeology, history, cultural traditions of old people, folk-lore, folk songs, tourist aspects from Gal Oya to Walawe and other far off places. His first publication, titled “Souvenirs of a Forgotten Heritage” (it’s the chronicle of Gal Oya, Veddas, purana people, their traditions, customs, folk-lore, folk-songs, fauna and flora) was published in 1990. Being a contributor to the local English newspapers, that book on Gal Oya was a collection of his past published and unpublished articles in the local press from time to time.
In this instance, Gamini has once again made the best literary value of his published and unpublished articles about Walawe basin, stretched back for a period of over two decades in writing the second monograph, titled “Vignettes of Far Off Things”. It contains in detail the roots of the Walawe basin, in introducing the history, tank civilization, jungle lore folk songs, fauna and flora, tourist aspects and adventure of the Walawe basin, in retrospect. This book is in three sections, viz from tank civilization, to past glimpses, from Vignettes of village life, folk-lore, folk-songs on the trails of Leonard Woolf, his characters and old villages, to place names ofGajaman Nona, famed poetess of old Lanka, Maduwanwela Walauwa and Panamure elephant kraals and tourist places of scenic splendor from Hot Water Springs in Mahapelessa, Forest Hermitages, Mountains, Valleys, Water-falls off the beaten tracki thus taking the reader on a wide travelogue of the many, many tourist attractions in the in the Walawe region, and into such far away places in search of “those far off things”.
The contents of this book are his own explorations, experiences of this part of the country’s past filled with diverse areas of interest covered by the author. It actually Gamini’s congenial field job as a field officer attached to the land settlement section of the G.O.D.B./R.V.D.B., in Gal Oya and Walawe and the MASL – Walawe which helped him immensely to visit those places of many surroundings and glean a wealth of first land information about them.
Gamini had not only captured them in his own writings, but also has captured them in an array as photographs which would give the reader a photographic vision of such places sunk in obscurity and gone into oblivion. Profesor Nandasena Ratnapala, in this foreword has this praiseworthy accolade to say about Gamini’s priceless book, “Vignettes of Far Off Things” is a rare book that anyone could enjoy and profit from the vast knowledge embedded in it. I wish as many as possible Sri Lankans read this unique contribution by a man who lived his life among the people as well as the flora and fauna of whom he speaks about and who feels for them sincerely.”
