The author’s thesis is that the economic motive played an important role in the origin and continuation of the institution of polyandry.
This book describes polyandry as practised in the Himalayas and analyzes its psychological, biological, and economic causes. A complete chapter is devoted to the geographical background to give an idea of the peculiar situation and the nature of the states where polyandry prevails. It studies comprehensively the castes and tribes which are under the shadow of this custom. The part played by the peculiar position which women enjoy because of their economic utility coupled with a disparity of proportion between the sexes is discussed in detail. The book concludes with a penetrating appraisal of the changes in the region as a result of the development activities and the social, political, and economic forces which are greatly influencing the people’s outlook.
Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in her Foreword to the book observes: “ Dr Parmar’s book is a commendable effort. . . [He] has rightly pointed out that there is usually some economic reason for a social custom . . . . By putting it in its proper historical and economic context, the author gives us a deeper understanding of the manner in which societies evolve institutions to enable them to deal with the basic problems of living and surviving.”
