The Indian state of West Bengal has a rich and living tradition of handicrafts. These, though primarily folk in character, include a highly sophisticated tradition of textile manufacture that reached and, even today, maintains a high level of excellence. It was the fame of Bengal's textiles that first attracted the adventurer-traders of the British East India Company and led ultimately to the subjugation of Bengal, and then the whole subcontinent, to British rule.
This book captures, through its text and its unique selection of illustrations, especially commissioned for the volume, the variety and vitality of Bengal's crafts and the range of their creative expression. It traces the nexus between maker and user which is so vital to a living tradition of folk art and craft and traces and illustrates the variety of influences that have shaped this tradition.
Potteery, Mats & Basketry, Embroidery, Textiles, Metal Work, Jewellery, Wood & Stone Musical Instruments, Ivory, Shell & Horn, Hill Crafts and Festival Crafts each has a chapter devoted to it each lavishly illustrated.
