Located in the heart of Paris, the Association for the Study and Documentation of Asian Textiles (A.E.D.T.A.) has a collection of textiles amassed over a period of forty years by Krishna Riboud, it founder. The fabrics, the majority of which is ancient, date from the fifteenth to the early twentieth centuries and are mainly from India, Indonesia, Japan and china, four leading spheres in textile production.
In recent years, the mounting fascination with textile art has entered a new phase of historical interest and assessment. This volume is devoted to individual topics written by noted textile specialists. In order to illustrate their respective themes which cover textiles from the four leading spheres, the scholars have concentrated on the fabrics which figure in the collection of the A.E.D.T.A. The various themes treated here help to reveal the most significant facets of the concept, production and use of textiles, and serve to highlight the tremendous range of skill and imagination they represent. Certain articles discuss the trade and exchange which existed among several countries and which accounted for social and economic factors which prevailed until recent times.
Oriental tastes and designs have for centuries had an impact on Western textiles, and on other decorative arts. It is hoped that by means of works such as this volume, increased knowledge of this living tradition will go beyond the textile specialist and craftsperson to attract all those who love the beauty inherent in this special art-form.
