Vesak Nanayakkara’s is an intriguing name until it is explained simply that he was born on
a Vesak full moon night. But Vesak Nanayakkara is still more intriguing when he is encountered as a kind of sprite who leaps agilely through time, even as he has through space. He is the perfect traveler and raconteur. The author, now past his three score years and Ten, and with not many miles to go, looks back on a joyous life where he has come close enough to the rainbow to embrace its colours. He remains a sensualist who re-discovered ec- static revelations in the life-giving caress of his native sky; he has ranged many lands far and near in the manner of a medieval pilgrim drawaing strength and sustenance from his trav- els. Within a busy day, he continues to find the time to read occasionally , and write to the press and sundry journals.
Moored throughout his adult years in a minor- Ity, he views himself as a romantic in mourning for his era’s lost grace and style . Like the early Zionists who called themselves ‘Olim’ (pil-Grims; those who ascend), secular rabbis of a new faith of redemption, he keeps dreaming of a morally perfect society. By all accounts yet fit and robust, his second assay into the realms of writing is with the printer, one more distillation into a remem-brance of things past.
