This book makes an ambitious attempt to illus- Trate with colour photographs, a selection of some of
the more interesting birds of Sri Lanka . It is not meant to be a serious ornithological work on the
birds of this country. Written description have been kept very brief because the photographs will convey the form and character of the birds much better than words can do. However, in the accompanying text, the reader may come across bits of information that have not been mentioned in the more technical books dealing with the birds of this island. Being neither an expert orni-
thologist nor a faultless photographer, it is with utmost diffidence that I present this volume.
A bird photographer spends many hours at a time cooped up inside a ‘hide’ almost within touching
distance of his subjects. Thereby he is provided with a unique opportunity to strike up intimate associations with his feathered friends. Even if a good picture was not forthcoming the thrill or studying a bird so closely is reward enough.
